Lantern House – Chelsea, New York
Lantern House on West 18th Street is much more than a residential building – it is a statement in the Chelsea skyline. Designed by the renowned Heatherwick Studio, the project shapes the immediate surroundings of the High Line with its iconic, three-dimensional windows. The two structures – a ten-story and a 22-story tower – are connected by a glass lobby that floats like a transparent pavilion beneath the park.
The windows, inspired by New York’s classic bay windows, give the brick façade a rhythmic depth and, at night, resemble lanterns illuminating the cityscape.
Inside, the design firm March & White relies on timeless elegance. The spacious floor plans and a wide range of amenities – from fitness studio to rooftop lounge – make Lantern House a sought-after address in the luxury segment.
The building not only integrates architecturally into the urban fabric, but also creates a bridge between industrial history and contemporary architecture. As a landmark on the High Line, it impressively unites art, city, and living.
Our products in use
As a specialist for all types of façade openings, Gretsch-Unitas Baubeschläge combines project-specific special components – developed as innovative engineering solutions according to individual customer requirements – with elements from the proven standard range. GU supports customers from technical planning and design through testing to the implementation of projects worldwide. Lantern House impresses with its distinctive façade, sloping both inward and outward. For this exceptional architecture, drop-down fittings from Gretsch-Unitas were used. The elements are supported by gas tension and gas compression springs, which ensure comfortable and safe opening and closing.
The drop-down function offers both functional and aesthetic advantages in many construction projects: the window sash lowers slightly outward when opened and remains stable in any position – ideal for a homogeneous exterior appearance in all-glass façades (structural glazing).
