Buckingham Green – Architecture and urban space united
Buckingham Green is a mixed-use quarter project in the heart of London, designed by Fletcher Priest Architects and completed in 2018. It consists of a refurbished tower—the former Rolls-Royce Tower—as well as two new buildings with office space, retail, and a total of 65 high-quality apartments. The project took the rare opportunity to rethink a historically evolved urban district in the immediate vicinity of St. James’s Park and to integrate it harmoniously into the dense urban fabric. In addition to the refurbishment of the 16-storey tower, two new buildings, “No. 3 Buckingham Green” and the “Gate House”, were constructed, reflecting the diversity of the surroundings and providing additional space for living and working. The new public square creates a high-quality environment and connects to the surrounding street network. Buckingham Green is considered a new benchmark for the enhancement of public spaces in central locations—close to Westminster Abbey and Parliament. Before the redesign, the area was characterized by narrow alleys and unused rear spaces. Today, an open, sunny square connects modern commercial units and gastronomy with high-quality architecture made of red brick and glass.
The design brings light, quality of stay, and elegant materiality into the urban structure and reflects the historical context. The new core of the tower was architecturally clearly defined: a fully glazed lobby, black anodized window frames, and fine marble surfaces create an elegant transition between interior and exterior. The building achieves an 80% improvement in energy efficiency and combines four floors of office space with twelve residential floors above.
