Museum Wittelsbacher Schloss – Experiencing history anew
The Wittelsbacher Schloss in Swabian Friedberg looks back on a long history – and has served as a museum for over 130 years. After comprehensive modernization, it was reopened to visitors in May 2019. The origins of the High Medieval building date back to 1257, when Duke Ludwig II the Severe had the complex built to protect the Bavarian customs station at the border to the Imperial City of Augsburg. Strategically located on a projecting spur of the Lechleite, the castle is clearly separated from the adjacent plateau by a deep neck ditch. The combination of defensive structure, Renaissance architecture, and museum use makes the castle a unique cultural site that impressively connects past and present. The renovation enabled not only monument-appropriate restoration, but also a functional and security-related upgrade of the building – in harmony with its historical significance.
Entering the castle through the massive gate tower with preserved keep elements, one passes the vaulted gate hall and reaches the asymmetrical inner courtyard. Here, arcades with round and segmental arches frame the ensemble. The east wing with Renaissance oriel and rusticated portal, as well as the lower utility wing to the north, reflect the building's history. Since the renovation in 1982, numerous exhibits on city and regional history have been presented in 14 rooms.

As part of the renovation, the Gretsch-Unitas Group supplied modern security technology for the doors. SECURY multi-point locking systems with panic function and compatible escape door controls were used. The requirements for burglary resistance (RC2 and RC3) in combination with secure escape route technology were reliably met – while preserving the historic building structure.
The electrically controlled panic door locks from BKS offer secure escape door solutions with clear signaling and convenient control. The compact systems, available in surface-mounted or flush-mounted versions, meet the highest safety standards according to DIN EN 13637 and EltVTR. Thanks to modular design, network connectivity, and a wide range of functions, individual door solutions can be easily implemented – space-saving and reliable.
GU SECURY multi-point locking systems provide optimal protection for exterior doors – with high burglary resistance, tightness, and comfort. Additional locking points at the top and bottom of the door ensure reliable security, while automatic self-locking replaces manual locking. Whether timber, PVC, aluminum, or steel doors – each solution is individually tailored to the installation situation.
