Experimenta Heilbronn – modern science center
Experimenta in Heilbronn is Germany's largest science center and a unique world of learning and experience for all age groups. The center consists of the former Hagenbucher warehouse and a spectacular new building on the Kraneninsel, which was opened in 2019. On 25,000 m², there are 275 interactive exhibits, laboratories, creative studios, as well as the Science Dome with experimental theater and observatory. The new building by Sauerbruch Hutton (Berlin) is designed as a sculptural stack of steel, spiraling upwards into the sky. The spatial choreography stages changing views of the cityscape as you ascend. The striking building forms the centerpiece of the 2019 Federal Garden Exhibition and combines innovative architecture with didactic functionality. The experimenta conveys scientific and technical knowledge in an illustrative way and makes complex content tangible through interaction and spatial dramaturgy.
The new building complements the existing structure to form a functional ensemble. A central piazza provides access to a spiral-shaped tour with four themed levels offering insights into science and technology. Creative studios, an experimental theater, an observatory, and a 360° dome cinema complete the offering. The rooftop terrace offers a wide view over the Neckar Valley.
