Kunsthalle Rostock – Modernisation and diversity
Kunsthalle Rostock, the largest exhibition venue for contemporary art in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, underwent comprehensive refurbishment in 2020. The building fabric no longer met current standards, and the energy-efficient renovation was particularly challenging due to heritage protection requirements. The distinctive concrete relief façade with 1,200 elements was restored and partially newly manufactured to preserve the original character while meeting modern requirements. The refurbishment made the Kunsthalle fully accessible, allowing all visitors unrestricted access. Modern offices were created for the team, and a specially designed darkroom now provides space for lectures and film screenings, significantly expanding the Kunsthalle’s cultural offerings. Thanks to the modernisation, sensitive artworks and additional loans can now also be displayed, making the exhibitions more varied and international.
Since its reopening in May 2023, the Kunsthalle has presented itself as a vibrant venue for art and culture, attracting art enthusiasts from all over the world. The challenge was to design a modern security concept that integrates innovative technology almost invisibly into façades and doors to ensure optimal protection. The discreet integration of surveillance and security technology was essential to preserve the building’s aesthetics while providing the highest security standards. This enabled the creation of effective protection that optimally safeguards both the artworks and the building itself.
