Mensa Campus Garching

The new cafeteria at the Garching campus will 'have a different character than the buildings that otherwise stand in Garching,' says architect Meck. The building will have a 'flat, wooden exterior. Quite deliberately. Because this is a material that, in this form, does not yet exist on campus.'
Spacious, bright and communicative

Mensa Campus Garching – Architecture with function

The new cafeteria at the Garching campus of TU München not only meets the highest requirements for functionality, but also makes a strong architectural statement. With over 5,000 m² of main usable area, it offers space for up to 1,500 seats and enables the serving of around 7,000 meals per day – a major logistical project. Architect Florian Nagler (Meck Architekten) deliberately chose a large-scale wooden façade to give the building a distinctive appearance in the otherwise technically dominated campus environment. The spacious dining hall on the first floor is fully glazed and offers views into a central courtyard, which is visually divided into several smaller lounge areas. The construction spans large distances and discreetly integrates the building services. In addition to its function as a food service facility, the cafeteria is also an important communication hub for students and a central meeting point on campus. Source: Meck Architekten

With its distinctive wooden façade, the cafeteria stands out as a deliberately contrasting element to the technically dominated buildings on campus. The large dining hall with all-round glazing is located on the first floor and overlooks a quiet courtyard, which gives the space structure and creates visual connections between the dining areas. This open spatial concept promotes communication and creates a pleasant atmosphere for students and staff.
